Sarcopenia is defined as an age related progressive loss of mass and function of skeletal muscle, which significantly compromises the quality of life. Degenerative changes in muscle mass with aging are largely due to impaired neuromuscular junctions, lack of physical activity, metabolic changes and oxidative stress. Moreover, sarcopenia is also associated with decreased satellite cells in aging, which causes poor regeneration of muscles. Satellite cells are the skeletal muscle stem cells that are responsible for skeletal muscle repair and regeneration when the heavy muscle experiences stress during weight-bearing activities. Pathological changes in skeletal muscle mass have severe consequences to the overall health of an individual. Sarcopenia is associated with frailty, acute and chronic diseases, insulin resistance, falls, fatigue and mortality. Due to several consequences of sarcopenia, it is now considered a risk factor for mortality among independently of age. In order to prevent or at least lessen the detrimental effects of this condition, resistance training has been suggested to prevent muscle loss and stimulate satellite cell activation in order to sustain muscle regeneration.
