Evening primrose oil is extracted from seeds of evening primrose, a flowering plant native to North and South Africa. It is rich in omega 6 fatty acids, including linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid. Gamma-linolenic acid is said to treat and help in the management of various diseases characterized by chronic inflammation, including psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetes. Its component gamma-linolenic acid has been reported to suppress inflammatory reaction. It suppresses inflammation mediators such as IL-1 beta, IL-6 and TNF alpha cytokines. Clinical studies have reported that patients with atopic eczema treated with evening primrose oil have less inflammation, dryness, and overall severity compared to controls. A study has also evaluated the beneficial effects of evening primrose oil to patients with multiple sclerosis. Evening primrose oil consumption in multiple sclerosis disease has been reported to decrease pain and increase cognitive function, vitality, and overall satisfaction with life. Lastly, evening primrose oil has been proposed as a possible treatment for diabetic neuropathy. Although there is minimal evidence to support these claims and the exact mechanisms of action are still unknown, studies support that gamma-linolenic acid is an essential component of the myelin sheath and may normalize nerve conduction velocity. A study has been conducted to study the beneficial effects of evening primrose oil supplementation to patients with diabetic polyneuropathy. Patients received either 360 milligrams of gamma-linolenic acid or indistinguishable placebo capsules for 6 months. At the end of the study, the results of the study revealed that gamma-linolenic acid showed statistically significant improvement in neuropathy symptom scores, cold threshold values, and nerve motor conduction velocity.
