Apigenin is a flavonoid found in a variety of fruits such as grapefruit and vegetables such as parsley, onions, broccoli, chamomile tea, and parsley. In general, as a flavonoid, it is widely known for its antioxidant properties. In addition, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects have been reported. Apigenin has been shown to inhibit alpha-glucosidase activity, which could be an effective strategy to treat type 2 diabetes. Alpha-glucosidase is an enzyme that hydrolyzes carbohydrates into glucose and increases postprandial glucose levels. Inhibition of glucosidase activity helps in delaying digestion of carbohydrates, which may reduce the postprandial glucose levels and prevent impaired glucose tolerances in diabetes. This flavonoid has been shown to have beneficial role in amnesia and Alzheimer's disease by preventing microglial activation and protecting against or delay Alzheimer's disease onset. Microglia are the resident immune and phagocytic cells of the brain, which activation has been associated with amyloid plaques in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease. In rats, three months supplementation of apigenin has shown improvements in memory and learning deficits, as well as a lowered insoluble concentration of beta-amyloid peptide, which is considered to be the hallmark pathologies that characterize Alzheimer's disease.
