Evening primrose oil is extracted from evening primrose, which is a plant that typically grows in Europe and North america. Evening primrose oil is a rich source of omega-6-fatty acids, including linoleic acid and gamma linoleic acid. It been shown to improve conditions characterized by hormonal imbalance condition in women, like polycystic ovaries syndrome or PCOS. Obesity is a common finding in women with PCOS. Obesity increases systemic inflammation, which has negative effects on the ovaries and alters the hormonal levels. Adipose tissue also contributes to hormonal imbalance by secreting molecules, such as leptin and adiponectin that regulate many biological functions. Leptin has been shown to influence fertility, gonadotropin secretion and ovarian steroidogenesis in human and rat. In a study, evening primrose oil has been reported to possess strong direct and indirect anti inflammatory action due to its sterols content. Evening primrose oil has also reduced adiposity and improved elevated insulin resistance beside the improvement of serum testosterone and gonadotropins. There is no standard dose of evening primrose oil, but the recommended daily dose is 500 milligrams, which is considered safe in adults.
