L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid that is important to many biological processes in the body. L-tryptophan has been discovered in the 1900's after isolating it from casein protein. As an essential amino acid, the body cannot synthesize it and must be supplied by the diet. Some common sources of L-tryptophan include oats, bananas, chicken, peanuts, and chocolate. L-tryptophan is required for the synthesis of serotonin, which acts as a neurotransmitter and hormone in the nervous system. Imbalance in serotonin levels in the brain may influence mood and mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Such mood disorders are associated with low levels of serotonin. L-tryptophan intake can help increase serotonin levels and may help in reducing anxiety and depressed moods. This amino acid is also required for the synthesis of melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates diurnal rhythms and influences reproductive system and immunity. It has been reported that taking L-tryptophan at a dose of 1 g, 45 minutes before bedtime can decrease the time taken to fall asleep in those with wild insomnia and in those with a long sleep latency. However, this can be not effective on moderate and severe insomnia as standard hypnotics.
