Rutin is a citrus flavonoid abundantly found in certain plants, such as passion flower, buckwheat, tea, and apple. Rutin is composed of quercetin with disaccharide rutinose. It has been reported to have antioxidant, cytoprotective, anticarcinogenic, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective activities. Rutin also has vasoprotective properties. Some people use it for the treatment of various vein diseases, such as chronic venous insufficiency. Chronic venous insufficiency of the lower extremities is a relatively common condition that occurs when the veins in the legs don't allow the normal flow of blood back to the heart. Clinical features of this condition include discomfort, swelling, varicose veins, and skin changes or ulceration. An oral drug, called Hydroxyethylrutosides, derived from semi-synthetic flavonoids obtained through the hydroxylation of the natural flavonoid, rutin, has been reported to be promising for controlling the signs of chronic venous insufficiency, including varicous veins. Hydroxyethylrutosides reduces microvascular permeability, which leads to improved microcirculation and reduced edema. It has been reported to facilitate lysis of insoluble fibrin complexes around capillaries, stimulate local macrophage activation and neutrophil adherence leading to improvement in venous stasis.
