The GDF11 protein is a protein that has been found to have the ability to reverse aging in mice. It is also known as growth differentiation factor 11. The GDF11 protein is a member of the TGF-beta superfamily and it has been found to be active in the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle.

GDF11 was first discovered by doctor Amy Wagers and her team at Harvard University in 2005 when they were studying how muscles age. They found that GDF11 levels decrease with age and this leads to muscle degeneration. In 2012, Wagers and her team found that mice that were injected with GDF11 had increased flexibility and muscle mass. They also theorized that GDF11 might play a role in human muscle deterioration as well.

The GDF11 protein is also believed to be involved with the metabolism of glucose, lipids, and proteins. GDF11 has been found to have a growth promoting effect on muscle and bone tissue in mice. It also promotes neuronal plasticity, creating more synapses between neurons which leads to improved memory function and learning capacity. GDF11 is known to bind to a receptor, GDFR2, which activates a pathway leading to accelerated muscle growth. It also leads to an increase in bone formation. Lastly, it is thought that GDF11 has some effect on inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors.
