Berberine is a natural compound isolated from a variety of herbal plants. It is found in particularly high concentrations in goldenseal, Coptis chinese, and Berberis vulgaris. This compound has been used as a therapeutic agent for diarrhea, bronchitis, and infections. Recent research has demonstrated that berberine may also be a potential drug for non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Non alcoholic fatty liver disease is a chronic condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of lipids in non adipose tissues. Pathologic alterations in lipid metabolism pathways, insulin resistance, and inflammation are key players in the process of non alcoholic fatty liver disease. On the fatty liver, berberine inhibits cholesterol and triglyceride synthesis hepatocytes. Intraperitoneal injection of berberine for three weeks has been shown to alleviate hyperlipidemia and fatty liver in obese mice. Recent research suggests that berberine combats fatty liver and related syndromes through multiple mechanisms. For example, berberine improves insulin sensitivity, hepatic lipid secretion, and cholesterol metabolism.
