Old Lion Lolparpit Surrounded At A Hyena Den | Maasai Mara Safari | Zebra Plains

Old lion Lolparpit found himself surrounded by noisy hyenas when he walked into a hyena den.
Mid-October 2020, Lolparpit was repotedly on his last legs, could hardly walk, and had not been seen for a few days leading some to believe he had passed on. Returning to camp late one evening Jackson, Dominic, and I spotted a big lion running towards one of the hyena dens close to camp. Thinking it was probably a Sankai male lion we moved in closer and, to our surprise, saw it was Lolparpit that had chased a hyena cub into one of the holes. He was extremely skinny but moving well. The Adult hyenas soon came to see what was happening at the den and surrounded the old lion whooping and growling.
Despite his poor condition and advanced age, Lolparpit only had to stand up and roar softly to get the hyenas to move back.
We left him in the hope of finding him with the Enkoyonai lion pride in the morning as they had been seen nearby.
As this was filmed in the dark, without spotlights, using infrared night vision the video quality is not great but the sounds are incredible
