Taurine-conjugated ursodeoxycholic acid or TUDCA is a secondary bile acid produced by intestinal bacteria. It was originally approved by US FDA for the treatment of certain cholestatic liver diseases. Various studies suggest other benefits of TUDCA in different health conditions, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, and renal disease. TUDCA has neuroprotective effects in several neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. It inhibits nuclear factor kappa B activation in astrocytes and microglia, preventing an exacerbated pro-inflammatory response in the insult site. Reducing the activation of astrocytes and microglial cells has an anti-inflammatory effect in neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation refers to the activation of the brain's innate immune system, which is associated with neurodegenerative diseases. In Parkinson's disease, TUDCA has been reported by an article published in Molecular neurobiology journal published in 2018 have effective preventive effects in parkinsonian syptoms, such as spontaneous activity, ability to initiated movement and tremors. TUDCA has been shown to prevent decrease of ATP levels, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation.
