New email for contact: info@superlongevity.net Beta-hydroxybutyrate is one of the most abundant ketone bodies in blood circulation. It is synthesized and released by the liver from fatty acids and acts as a source of energy, when the amount of glucose in the blood is too low to support the body's energetic needs during periods of prolonged exercise, fasting, or absence of dietary carbohydrates. Recent research have been discovering other various benefits of beta-hydroxybutyrate, especially in aging-related diseases like Alzheimer's disease. According to an article published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation, BHB has been found to attenuate Alzheimer's disease pathology by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In the study, mice treated with B H B had fewer amyloid plaques and less pronounced microgliosis compared to untreated control mice. Amyloid plaques and microgliosis are both characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. The accumulation of amyloid plaques between neurons causes them to die and induce inflammation around that area, which further reinforce the death of neurons. Microgliasis is the proliferation of activated microglia at the site of inflammation to protect neurons from neurotoxic plaque, but also promotes neuroinflammation that leads to neuronal damages and death. NLRP3 activation through dietary BHB or fasting that promotes the natural production of BHB could be an effective therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease.
