Vitamin D intake has become more popular in the last two years in the wake of the pandemic. This vitamin is important for maintaining strong bones because calcium can only be absorbed through vitamin D, as well as being an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and has neuroprotective elements for brain cells, muscle function, and the immune system.

Although it is not found naturally in many foods, it is present in fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, and sardines, as well as in milk and fortified cereals. Its major production comes from the sun when sunlight converts the skin chemical calciferol into an active form of Vitamin D.

It is not recommended to take vitamin D supplements in some conditions, and if contraindicated concurrently with some medications. For example, those suffering from kidney stones, sarcoidosis, high calcium in the blood, decreased kidney function and high phosphate in the blood should avoid taking vitamin D supplements.

As for people who use other medications, they should be careful. Some medications can have interactions with vitamin D which can be dangerous. It can affect the way the body absorbs atorvastatin, a cholesterol medication, and the same is true for verapamil, a blood pressure medication. Taking vitamin D with verapamil can greatly increase the risk of hypercalcemia.

In the case of drugs like cholestyramine, its interaction with vitamin D can actually reduce the body's absorption of the vitamin.

As you might have seen, this supplement is recommended for groups of people who are at risk of a deficiency, those being people older than 65, patients with a number of diseases such as osteoporosis, intestinal malabsorption syndrome, liver disease, and chronic kidney disease.
