Magnesium is a chemical element that acts as a cofactor for over 300 enzymatic reactions that makes it necessary for several metabolic pathways, including glucose metabolism, energy production and nucleic acid synthesis. Excellent sources of magnesium include spinach, legumes, nuts, and seeds. The recommended dietary allowance of magnesium for magnesium is approximately 400 milligrams daily for men and 310 milligrams for women. Two-thirds of the population in the western world has a deficiency problem. Magnesium deficiency is associated with various health issues including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, asthma, and also migraine headache. Magnesium deficiencies have been described to promote the major elements of migraine development, including alteration of nociceptive processing, alteration of nociceptive processing and neurotransmitter release. In a study, in 40 patients with acute migraine attack, 50% of them had magnesium levels lower than the normal limits. According to recent evidence, magnesium could potentially be used as a well-tolerated and effective way of preventing migraine.
