WHY DO WE DO THE WRONG THING AND HOW DO WE STOP? by J Loren Norris

WHY DON’T WE DO WHAT WE KNOW TO DO?

YOU KNOW THE RIGHT THING BUT DO NOTHING OR THE WRONG THING. WHY?

What is the cause of wrong doing? It must be something common to all humankind because I don’t know a single human who does every right thing. I don’t know a single human who never, ever does a wrong thing. I do know many humans who would clearly and quickly agree - I know what I SHOULD DO - but doing otherwise is easier, more convenient, more politically correct or socially acceptable.

How is it so?
Truth is, sometimes we have “wants” or desires which drive our behavior. These desires are ours alone and can easily cause tunnel vision. We become so focused on attaining the object of our desires we overlook the unintended consequences of our immediate and present choices or behavior.

As an example.
A craving for chocolate cake suddenly comes over me when I walk into a restaurant. It doesn’t matter what the doctor has said about my blood sugar. I can ignore what my wife says about my waste line. I can ignore my inner self screaming “Do you know how many miles that equals strolling through the neighborhood?” Now I have a conflict and dilemma. When the dessert trays comes around, I will see and smell the OBJECT OF MY DESIRE! What in the world would keep me from saying yes and indulging???

Perhaps for you it’s a new gadget, new dress, new pair of shoes, new relationship (or revisiting and old one). RETAIL THERAPY can be as bad an addiction as chocolate cake and crack cocaine.

I have some ideas on how to resist in this struggle but I want to know your thoughts before I share mine, so share this post with your thoughts on HOW TO DO THE RIGHT THING EVERY TIME and look back for my ideas tomorrow.
