Do you sell hype or hard work? by J Loren Norris

HYPE VS REALITY - which one do you actually buy-in to?
After decades in advertising and marketing I realize the simple way to get the attention you want for your product or service is to “tell the end user exactly what the want to hear.”

If they want to join your fitness club so they can look good by summer, it’s easier to sell a “beach body” than hours of grueling, painful, sweat inducing labor.

If they want a deck in the back yard to chill with friends and enjoy the weather - you sell the luxury upgrade to quality of life - not the labor of weather treating the wood and replacing broken boards.
If they want the life style of the “rich and famous” you sell the sports cars, yachts and fine dining not the endless hours of study, dedication, perseverance and singleminded focus - because those things are hard and demanding.

It’s much easier to sell the sizzle when someone else is harvesting the wild meat.

$89 for 40 seconds - or $8,000 an hour. That’s the income for selling hype.
The cost for earning $200,000 in the same 40 seconds - a broken nose, a knockout while the whole world was watching and countless hours of training leading up to it.

As a leader do you have team members focused on and driven by the glamour of the end results with no expectation of the effort required to achieve it?

Do you sell the sizzle or the real deal and all it will take to get it?
