AM I A FAILURE IF I FAIL? by J Loren Norris
AM I A FAILUE IF I FAIL?
“Failure is an event or an incident, not an identity! Too often we allow our mistakes, bad choices, short comings and unpleasant experiences to become our motivating factors and driving forces. When we do this, we allow them to shape not just what we’ve done, but who we are. Success is not defined by what we gain, but by who we become along the way. We must never allow these short comings to become our identity.” J Loren Norris
We need to address our failures in order to take corrective action and prevent them in the future, then move on from them secure in our own ability and confidence.
ADDRESS FAILURE
If failure repeats itself, there is a lesson we have not yet learned. We must be willing to be honest about our failure. We must be willing to accept fault rather than casting blame. Even if the majority of the failure was outside our control, we must ask, “Is there anything I could have done differently which would have produced a different outcome?”
TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTION
If there is any part of the problem, incident, event, for which we can take responsibility, then we also have authority to change that part. We need to be proactive in finding a new way to deal with the part of the problem we initiated. We need to consider all the alternative actions which could have been taken and we need to make note of all options should a similar circumstance arise again.
PREVENT THE SAME FAILURE IN THE FUTURE
If we have taken the time to diligently reflect and review the moment of failure, we should have all we need to recognize when a similar issue is on the horizon. When failure seems to be coming into view, it is a good time to take preemptive measures by asking ourselves, “What role did I play in the issue last time? How could I alter my approach and actions before this starts? What do I need to do differently even if no one else changes their approach?”
MOVE ON WITH CONFIDENCE
Having addressed the reality of the failure or loss by reflecting on all the details within your control and taken action to prevent recreating the same circumstance, you have done everything in your power to prevent failure from reoccurring. You can move forward with the confidence that you are NOT THE SOURCE of the failure and failure is not your identity. Rather, you are part of the solution and because you are becoming a better you in the process, SUCCESS IS ON ITS WAY TO YOU.
