Backpacking Buckskin Gulch | Wire Pass to White House Trailhead

Buckskin Gulch, at just over 13 miles, is the longest and deepest slot canyon in the world and is located in Kane County, Utah, just north of the Arizona border. There are four ways to access the gulch giving hikers and backpackers a variety of routes to enjoy this amazing natural wonder. This trip started at Wire Pass and exited at the White House Trailhead, making the full journey roughly 21 miles. Along this route the Wire Pass trail meets the Paria River confluence which leads to the White House Trailhead. Near the confluence is a popular spot to stop and camp for the evening because if the 40-to-50-foot bluffs with plenty of level camp pads. The canyon also opens up very wide at this location giving you plenty of room for stargazing as you look past the 400-foot vertical canyon walls.

This long-anticipated trip was meant to be a Coleman Brothers meet-up, but we were missing a few of us due to occupational duties and other family obligations. The trip was initiated by our one and only brother-in-law, Adam, who by default is really just one of the Coleman boys because he’s low on the maturity spectrum level like the rest of us and we sort of have to include him because he’s married to our sister.

Before entering the canyon, Adam, my brother David and I, were lucky enough to camp the first night for free in the first-come-first-serve Stateline Campground that straddles the border of both Utah and Arizona. We parked David’s vehicle at the White House Trailhead so we could make our way back to where I left my truck after we completed our hike.

The trip was full of good sights and laughs and plenty of childish tomfoolery to keep it exciting and interesting. This was definitely a backpacking trip we’ll be talking about for years to come.
