Speed Limit is an Austrian heavy metal band from Salzburg, formed in 1984. The band disbanded in 1994, but has been active again since 2008. The song Lady was an international hit in 1988, entering the single charts in seven countries and its music video was broadcast internationally.
Stylistically, the group moves between hard rock, melodic metal and classic heavy metal.
Speed Limit emerged in 1984 from the fusion of a predecessor band of the same name and the Salzburg band Ampere.
The band mainly performed locally in the early stages and released their first album Unchained in 1986. The band gained greater attention with the release of the EP Prophecy on Breaking Records. The track Lady reached chart positions in seven European countries, thanks in part to an elaborately produced music video. Tours in Germany, the Benelux countries, Italy and Hungary followed, among others, the band toured as support for Nazareth and Uriah Heep. A jury of the youth magazine Rennbahn Express (including Gene Simons of Kiss and Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden) voted the band Austria's best metal act in 1989.

In the following years, the band's sphere of influence was again limited to Austria and southern Germany, and the second album Perfect Inspiration, which was more hard rock than heavy metal, was unable to match earlier successes. From 1992 onwards, there were more changes in the line-up. The members decided to break up the band in 1994 due to the dwindling interest in the band, which they saw in the context of the general decline of classic heavy metal in the 1990s.

Speed Limit ist eine österreichische Heavy-Metal-Band aus Salzburg, die 1984 gegründet wurde. Die Band löste sich 1994 auf, ist aber seit 2008 wieder aktiv. Mit dem Lied Lady gelang 1988 ein internationaler Hit, der in sieben Ländern in die Singlecharts einzog und dessen Musikvideo international ausgestrahlt wurde.
Stilistisch bewegt sich die Gruppe zwischen Hard Rock, Melodic Metal und klassischem Heavy Metal.

Der Wirkungskreis verengte sich in den folgenden Jahren wieder auf Österreich und Süddeutschland und auch das zweite Album Perfect Inspiration, welches eher Hard Rock als Heavy Metal war, konnte nicht an frühere Erfolge anknüpfen. Ab 1992 kam es zudem zu vermehrten Besetzungswechseln. Die Mitglieder entschieden sich in Anbetracht des schwindenden Interesses an der Band, welches sie im Kontext des allgemeinen Niedergang des klassischen Heavy Metal in den 1990ern sahen, 1994 dazu die Band aufzulösen.
