A 1,500-year-old mosaic inscription discovered in what was the city of Bethsaida, Israel could be proof that the place was once the home of the Apostles of Jesus Christ, Saint Peter and Andrew, as reported in a medieval travel log. GreekReporter is reporting.

A team of archaeologists has discovered an inscription near the Sea of Galilee that points to the Apostle Peter and his role as one of the leaders of the early Church. CBN News reported.

The team, led by Prof. Mordechai Aviam and Prof. Steven Notley, unearthed the Greek inscription during excavations at the Church of the Apostles in what is believed to be ancient Bethsaida. CBN News reported.

The mosaic was first uncovered in 2021 when archaeologists were excavating the Byzantine era church, but it was shielded by layers of silt that took time to carefully remove. The Daily Mail reports.

When the next excavation season begins in October, archaeologists also hope to find an inscription dedicated to Andrew, since the church would likely have been dedicated to both men, reports Haaretz’s Ruth Schuster. Smithsonian Magazine reports.
