Learning from Solomon, the Wisest Fool to Ever Live | Must Apply Wisdom to Finish Well (1 Kings 11)
God wants us learning from Solomon, so He recorded his life very transparently. He’s one of the most unique men in scripture, in both good and bad ways. Solomon is mentioned nearly 300 times in the Old Testament and a dozen times in the New Testament. He’s in Jesus’ genealogy. Twice Jesus talked about how well Solomon was splendored and arrayed. Solomon built the temple and part of it was named after him: Acts 3 and 5 mention Solomon’s portico.
But he also engaged in terrible idolatry. 1 Kings 11:4-7 says, “For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and did not wholly follow the Lord, as David his father had done. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem.”
These false gods were worshiped through evil practices such as child sacrifice. Don’t miss what this says. It doesn’t say Solomon allowed these high places in the land or allowed his wives to worship at them. It says he built them himself. The man who built the temple to for the Lord then built high places for idols. Something absolutely astounding is Solomon was worse in every single respect after receiving wisdom. He’s the best example in Scripture of the need to apply wisdom.
