Gas water heater pilot flame

Standard operating procedure for priming many Natural Gas water heaters in the US. This is a necessary process at installation and whenever the pilot flame goes out. A tell-tale sign of this issue usually comes in the form of a cold shower; thankfully, it rarely gets unbearably cold here in Florida. My anecdotal experience as a non-plumber has been that imminent tank failure is usually preceded by frequent pilot flame out.
