This is part of a book review series on early psychology that starts with Henri Ellenberger's The Discovery of the Unconscious. This book spans the Paleolithic up to the 20th century. One of the great things about this book is how it highlights some of more unsung heros who advanced the understanding of the unconscious, including the Marquis de Puységur and Pierre Janet. It also covers the main period of psychoanalysis including Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, and Carl Jung. There are large sections devoted to biography and the methods of the psychologist or shaman. Methods included are disease-object extraction, soul retrieval, exorcism, animal magnetism, and psychoanalysis. It's available in paperback and hardcover.
