East Lansing, Michigan – On April 25, 2022, East Lansing Police shot DeAnthony VanAtten, 20, in the Meijer parking lot on W Lake Lansing Rd.

Officers responded to the Meijer grocery store after a 911 caller reported an armed, masked man entering the building.

In the bodycam footage, VanAtten can be seen as an officer chases him through the parking lot. “He’s reaching, he’s reaching, he’s got a gun,” one officer can be heard shouting in another video as he gets behind a pickup truck and starts shooting at VanAtten, who was shot in the abdomen and leg. He was taken to a hospital then later transferred to the Ingham County Jail due to a probation violation warrant, but has since been released from custody.

A loaded handgun was found beneath a parked vehicle near where VanAtten had crouched before he was shot.
