D.C. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Friday evening following a domestic call.

Metropolitan Police Department's Assistant Chief Wright said in a press conference late Friday that police received a call around 7 p.m. about an armed man allegedly assaulting a woman in the 1900 block of Savannah Street SE.

The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived, but they then found a man fitting the suspects description on the block. Police began to pursue the man and Wright said during that pursuit, the officer saw he had a gun.

Wright said officers asked the man to drop his weapon, but he didn't listen.

The officers shot the man once and Wright said the officer again asked him to drop his weapon.

He again didn't comply, police said, so the officer fired again. The man was taken into custody in the 1900 block of Mississippi Avenue SE and police recovered the gun.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

The officer was not injured.

Police are now looking at body-worn camera footage, nearby surveillance and going door-to-door to learn more about what happened.

Wright said they believe the man and woman were domestic partners and some sort of verbal dispute escalated.

Police cannot say if the suspect fired his weapon.

The woman was not hospitalized, but she did received treatment for her injuries.
