Day by Day from the Movie, Godspell

Day by Day is from the 1971 Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak musical, Godspell. It is the third song in the show’s score and is reprised as the closing number for the 1973 film version, which is shown here...

The song is a beautiful play upon the 13th-century Prayer accredited to the English Bishop, Saint Richard of Chichester:

"May I know Thee more clearly,
Love Thee more dearly,
Follow Thee more nearly."

The version in Godspell follows more closely the wording in Hymn 429 of the 1940 Hymnal:

"Day by day,
Dear Lord, of thee three things I pray:
To see thee more clearly,
Love thee more dearly,
Follow thee more nearly,
Day by day."

The wondrous thing about Godspell is that it showed MILLIONS of people the True Way of Life...groups of FREE Men and Wombmen, living together in Kindness, where Richness is the Love in their Hearts and the work that they do, with Glee, is to Seek for God thru the Path that is Straight and Narrow, laid out for us by Jesus Christ...

The other aspect that I wished to share about Godspell, is that the words used were based largely upon the 1611 Edition of the Kings Jame Bible, and in particular, the Book of Matthew, which I have always shared with you is perhaps the Most Divine of all Scriptures in the History of this known Earth...and that, the Actors who have played in the various forms of Godspell, over the years, are a Who's Who of WHITE HAT Actors in Hollywood...those Divine ones found their way to this Beautiful Musical...
