Pricilla, our Big Brown Bat 🦇, getting her fur brushed after her breakfast of mealworms this morning. I see a little spec of one left in her coat lol. Bats love getting brushed! She took her first test flight ✈️ last night and did pretty good. She’s learning to use her wings to get to her food now (video coming soon) We’ve had her since she was a little pup 🐶. Hate to see her leave, but it will be such a proud moment. I make sure that upon release they know how and what they need to eat because I want them to survive and once they take off flying outside, they are gone. Although they do know their names and always swoop down when I call their names, they never let me hold them again and that’s what I want. 🥰. If you’d like to help in the care of any of the critters here, I can always use different kinds of donations. Just ask. Thank you!
Edited to add a couple things.
1. I am a licensed rehabilitator. Bats are a mammal and therefore, as with any mammal, can get the rabies virus. I am vaccinated for rabies. So do not handle bats with your bare hands. Always use thick gloves under the instructions of a licensed rehabber for helping out a bat. They are beautiful creatures and do a HUGE part of taking care of our ecosystem by eating insects and pollinating out plants. Without bats, we would be overran with insects.
2. I’ve been asked how you can help. Every critter that I get in has a different story and a different injury. Usually no two are the same. So I have to try and be ready for anything that comes in, becasue if I’m not, that particular critter may have to suffer while waiting for me to get what I need to treat it. I don’t get paid for anything I do for these critters. I do this because of Promises For Pepè. I’m keeping my promise to her. 🦨. So to help me try and keep stock of all that I need here is ways you can donate (tax free , meaning when you do your taxes there is a section for donations to charities and you can deduct all that you donate to us because we are a 501c3 charity organization.)
