David is suffering from extreme guilt and mental anguish. He recognizes the depth of his sin and the consequences. His sin has made him unfit to be in God's presence or to lead God's people. The thorough washing away of his iniquity and cleansing from his sin that David requests represent total forgiveness. He effectively asks God to forget his sin and purify him from it by deleting it. David is counting on God's mercy, love, and compassion with this request. As sinners, we should make the same request from the exact position of extreme anguish. Father, I know that I am filthy and unfit for your presence. I appeal to your never-ending mercy and grace. Please forgive, forget, and remove my sins so that I am fit to be welcomed back into your arms. Amen.
