presents episode 545 | Dr Gabrielle Lyon
Lillie Kane podcast

"I believe that with steering away from animal-based
foods that we will see an epidemic of osteoporosis"
-data are very clear: calcium, vitamin D, K2
~weight-bearing exercise, dietary protein are all
profoundly important for:
-skeletal muscle and bone
-supplementation can do it
"There is something to be said for a whole food matrix
-when we isolate pea proteins there is estrogen-like type activity
-we don't know the compounding effects...it is not found in nature
"It can be done with supplementation, but I have hesitancy towards
creating a diet deeply supplemented with non-whole foods"

Question: Does it have to be grass-fed, or
wild-caught animal proteins?
-don't care about that
-care about quality of protein at fundamental level:
~does it have correct amino acids
~enough amino acids without too many calories
"To get your protein from quinoa, would take 1000
calories, versus 180 from beef"
-don't limit consumption of animal-based or fish-based foods just
because can't get grass-fed or wild-caught organic

Question: How much protein to eat?
-high protein in literature is more than 30 to 35%
-I consume closer to 50% protein
Lillie Kane:
Dr Ted Naiman says that in the same way that we go
to the gym and our muscles grow; we eat more
protein, our kidneys' capacity grows
Dr Lyon:
"No evidence that one can have too much protein. It is based on:
-being able to dispose of the nitrogen and ammonia...which turns
into urea
-No data that there is a higher threshold of too much protein

Individuals exist on multiple levels of protein intake
-some can tolerate high protein, like me
-I also eat lots of carbs, so tolerate them no problem
Nutrition Science is so complicated due to so many
systems in place with so many factors
Core Fundamentals in place
-optimize for protein first
~it is extremely satiating; affects gut hormones
~has higher thermic effect on food (higher energy to metabolize)
~stimulate muscle protein synthesis:
which is: highly regarded & extremely energy expensive
~body has protein turnover, up to 250g or more per day
