The explosive #oxidation of #gummy bears, Swedish fish and sour patch kids is accomplished using potassium chlorate. This reaction oxidizes the sugars found in these candies and converts it to water and carbon dioxide. The oxidation of sucrose and fructose is also demonstrated. The purple color comes from the presence of the potassium ion. This reaction is exothermic and should give the viewer some idea as to the amount of energy that is stored inside of sugar molecules.

All reactions were done by a trained professional using all safety required safety equipment. Do not attempt this reaction unless in a properly equipped chemistry lab with properly trained staff.
