Is There A Dark Side? * 1 John 1:5 * Today's Verses

Today's Bible verse is 1 John 1:5, " This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all." Memorize a Bible verse today! Verses 5 through 10 are titled "God is Light." In this passage, John contrasts the behaviors of believers with the world's behaviors. Here, in verse 5, John starts by clearly explaining how he came to these conclusions. John got His information from Christ and is now relaying it to others. The reference to light and darkness was a common concept in ancient times, so John uses it here to make an easily understood point. The light was a common metaphor for perfection, while darkness was a common metaphor for evil, sin, wickedness, and unrighteousness. These two extremes are incompatible in believers because they are incompatible with God. John expands upon this principle in the rest of the passage.
