One hundred years ago this week, a convoy of 81 motorized Army vehicles rumbled into San Francisco. Among the men who made the 62-day journey from Washington, DC, was a young lieutenant colonel named Dwight D. Eisenhower.

His experiences crossing the country on roads that were often virtually impassable would later influence his decision as President to build the interstate highway system.
