On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the United States. They hijacked four airplanes in mid-flight. The terrorists flew two of the planes into two skyscrapers at the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact caused the buildings to catch fire and collapse. Another plane destroyed part of the Pentagon (the U.S. military headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Officials believe that the terrorists on that plane intended to destroy either the White House or the U.S. Capitol. Passengers on the plane fought the terrorists and prevented them from reaching their goals. Across America, people watched on their TV's scenes that resembled a Michael Bay disaster movie. In all, nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. These attacks saw the greatness of humanity come out in all of us. Several firemen rushed into smoke and rubble, not knowing if they would make it out alive. It did not matter if they were black, white, gay, straight or whatever. In that one moment, everyone united as brothers and sisters. Those moments of unity showed the coward terrorists that it will take a hell of a lot of effort to bring us down. So today if you see someone who is a cop, fireman, or you know someone in the military, please thank them for their service.
