In this video, the synthesis of salicylic acid is demonstrated. Salicylic acid is the precursor to acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin). To generate the product wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) is heated under reflux in the presence of strong base (NaOH). After 30 minutes at reflux the reaction was allowed to cool. After cooling the reaction was acidified with sulfuric acid until a solid forms. The in pure salicylic acid was vacuum filtered and recrystallized to generate pure salicylic acid. The pure material was vacuum filtered.
