Sea lions are related to walruses and seals. Along with the fur seals, they constitute the family of the Otariidae, collectively known as eared seals. Until recently, they were grouped in a single subfamily called the Otariíneos (Otariinae), while the fur seals were grouped in the subfamily of the Arcocephalíneos (Arcocephalinae). This division was based on the most prominent common feature shared by fur seals and absent in sea lions, namely the dense undercoat characteristic of the former.
