12 Roses You Can Propagate Without Breaking The Law

Here are my 12 choices for roses you can propagate by cuttings without having to worry about patents. They also happen to be great roses that perform well on their own roots (don't need to be grafted). For background, you may have seen plant tags that say something like "Unlicensed Propagation Prohibited" on newer releases of roses and other plants. That's because a rose breeder/introducer is given granted 20 years of exclusive rights to propagate that plant.

There are, however, many thousands of fantastic roses that were never patented or where the patent has expired. They form the backbone of the offerings at my small nursery, and there's no reason individual gardeners shouldn't try out some cuttings of their own!
