Why Planet Of The Apes Was Considered Unfilmable - Even By Its Author

Planet Of The Apes was a tough book to adapt because of the twist endings. Because something works on the page doesn't mean that it will translate to screen. How did they manage to adapt the book without going over budget and making it look too silly?
