I often use my phone as a backup video camera but it can be troublesome to use due to the restrictions of the built-in mic and the lack of availability of a wireless alternative at a reasonable price. This new lav mic set from Evil Eye has come to my rescue.

The kit consists of a receiver which plugs into the USB-C port of your phone and two clip-on wireless lavalier microphones with removable foam pop filters. The microphones have got built-in rechargeable batteries, with the receiver powered by the phone itself with a useful USB-C pass-through port to allow the phone and mic to be externally powered. Two short USB-C charging cables are included in the kit as is an informative and well-written user guide.

The set is made from plastic and is light in weight but feels well made and robust enough. The only thing lacking from the set is a carry case, which is a pity but there are plenty of generic third-party cases available out there.

Sound quality and range are both excellent for the price and far better than I was expecting. The sound seems heavily compressed to me, but for voiceovers and the sort of work this set is most likely to be used for, that is no bad thing. There is no detectable background noise or interference even at a distance and the audio is clean and does not need to be tweaked later. Output levels from the mics are on the high side but free from clipping and I had to reduce the gain by about 20% in post production, which is no bad thing.

There are limitations for the price as you would expect, construction is lightweight, there is no way to vary the microphone gain, both mics are on the same channel, and no there is no LCD screen although there are multi colour Status LEDs.

Using it could not be easier. Just plug the receiver into the phone's USB-C port and the tiny red LED on the side will illuminate. Press the button on one or both microphones and their status LEDs will flash briefly. When the mic and receiver LEDs show a solid colour, which takes just a second or so, they are connected. I was impressed by the operating range of the set and found the claimed 60ft to be easily exceeded with an outdoors line of sight connection. I found no sign of signal loss, interference or drop outs even at the 60ft mark. Of course, expect this to be greatly reduced for indoor use or when objects are sited between the mic and receiver.

I will most certainly be adding this little set to my gadget bag and if you need to upgrade from the built-in microphone on your phone, for the 43.99 price, this would be a great buy
