Between 1979 and 2007, the United States was more like a friend than an Enemy to China, although their ideologies were different, capitalism and socialism respectively.

On the other hand, the rapidly worsening relationship, with the Soviet Union, however, put China in the most dangerous situation, ever in its alleged five thousand-year history. China was only half a minute away from being bombarded, by the atomic bomb of a socialist country.

China's Chairman Mao realized that China could not have two superpowers as its enemies, at the same time. He had to choose one of them as his friend, between the aggressive imperialist United States, and the reactionary revisionist Soviet Union.

Obviously, the revisionist Soviet Union posed a much bigger threat to China, than the United States at that time. The Soviet Union was like a conqueror, while the United States was more like a missionary in those days.
