My 4th Grader's School Assignment: BUILD A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT! (Did Daddy Take it Too Far?)

My 4th grade daughter brought home an assignment from school the other day - build a musical instrument with a parent! The directive said we could build whatever we wanted, but suggested we could use things like straws, popsicle sticks, or rubber bands. She would be graded on things like the quality of the build, the ability to play loud or soft notes, and the ability to play at least 3 notes. Clearly this assignment was tailor made for me to do some serious dadding. So we talked about it together and decided to try to build a Cigar Box Mountain or Appalachian Dulcimer, an instrument indigenous to our home state of Kentucky, out of three Arturo Fuente cigar boxes. I've made a handful of Cigar Box Guitars in the past, but never have built a dulcimer. This should be fun!
