The Wrath of God
2nd in our series the Prophet Zephaniah

I. The Prophecy of Zephaniah - Zephaniah 1:1-3
A. A message of absolute destruction and desolation - Hebrews 12:29 and we must never forget Noah
B. The timing of this Word of the Lord
1. Before the repentance, revival & reformation of king Josiah, 18 years into his reign - 2 Kings 22:1-3
2. Recovering the Word of God, Heeding the Word from the Lord, The King as Iconoclast, Dealing with sodomy

II. The Least Considered Attribute of God - Wrath
A. It is the essential attitude and disposition of the perfectly Holy and Just God when confronted by sin and evil
1. It is part of His very being
a. We see sin as too small a thing - Psalm 11:4-7
b. God cannot look upon sin - He turned His back to Jesus when He became sin for us on the cross - Mark 15:33-34
2. The righteous character of God is bound up with His wrath
a. It is a permanent element of His nature
b. His wrath is manifest in giving people over to their iniquity - Romans 1:18-32
B. Yet His mercy is always extended to the wicked - Hosea 11:8-9
1. But those who think they can take advantage of His mercy are deluded - Romans 2:4-5
a. God’s mercy is designed to lead sinners to repentance
b. The impenitent are vessels of wrath - Romans 9:22
2. Jesus alone can deliver us from the wrath to come - 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10
3. Christians are under the Blood of the Lamb - Rom. 5:9
