In Islam, anything considered harmful to the body, mind, soul or society is prohibited (haram), while anything beneficial is permissible (halal). Islam forbids Muslims from consuming pork, alcohol or mind-altering drugs. Muslims must eat meat butchered and blessed in Islamic ways. This meat is called "Halal". Muslims gambling, usury, fortune-telling, killing, lying, stealing, cheating, oppressing or abusing others, being greedy or miserly, having sex outside of marriage, dishonoring parents and relatives, orphans or neighbours. Misbehavior is prohibited.

Islam, the major world religion preached by the Prophet Muhammad in Arabia in the 7th century. The Arabic word Islam, literally "surrender", illuminates the fundamental religious concept of Islam—that the believer (called a Muslim from the active participle of Islam) submits to the will of Allah (in Arabic, Allah: God). Allah is seen as the only God—the creator, sustainer, and restorer of the world. The will of God, to which man must submit, is revealed through the Holy Book of the Qur'an (often spelled Koran in English), which God revealed to His Messenger Muhammad. In Islam, Muhammad is considered the last of a series of prophets (including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Solomon, and Jesus) and his message simultaneously completes the "revelations" attributed to previous prophets.

Emphasizing an uncompromising monotheism and maintaining strict adherence to certain essential religious practices, the religion taught to a small group of Muhammadan followers spread rapidly through the Middle East to Africa, Europe, the Indian subcontinent, the Malay Peninsula, and China. At the beginning of the 21st century there were more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. Although many sectarian movements have arisen within Islam, all Muslims are bound by a common belief and sense of belonging to a single community.
