Mesa, Arizona - Around 9:30 p.m. on June 24, 2022, two Mesa Police Department officers pulled over a man near 8100 East University for a civil traffic stop.

The man, later identified as 54-year-old Paul R Newman, fired a weapon at them and the police returned fire. Mesa Fire and Medical Personnel treated Newman on the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Officials say his injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening, and neither officer was injured.

During the investigation, it was discovered that Newman had a $100,000 warrant for his arrest out of Coconino County for possession of dangerous drugs. He also had a large quantity of illegal drugs in his backpack.
