'Supercargo' is a person on board the ship who represents the owner of the cargo being carried.

'Old Style', with regard to dating, means the Julian calendar.

'Roodemas' is the celebration of the Feast of the Cross.

'Dementia praecox' is now known as 'schizophrenia'.

'Phthisical' = afflicted with tuberculosis

'Argand Lamp' is a specific type of oil-lamp notable for increased brightness over other lamps of its day (late 18th to mid-19th century).

'Aqua fortis' is nitric acid

1 rod = 16.5 feet = 5 meters

The picture used for Book IV, chapters 3-4 is an aerial view of Conanicut Island, used here under the Creative Commons Copyright-Only Dedication (based on United States law) or Public Domain Certification. Conanicut Island is home to Dr. Waite's private hospital. The hospital is purely fictional, but given the relatively undeveloped nature of the island, you can easily imagine it being an excellent place for a psychiatric hospital.
