Brian Cox stars as the Edinburgh detective in 50 episodes of the BBC Radio 4 series.

Inspired by the real-life memoirs of a Victorian inspector in Scotland, James McLevy prowls the dark streets of 1860s Edinburgh bringing criminals to justice, with the assistance of sidekick Constable Mulholland.

Siobhán Redmond costars as Jean Brash and Michael Perceval-Maxwell as Mulholland in these full-cast dramatisations.

Commencing on BBC Radio 4 in 1999, McLevy continues to regularly appear in the Afternoon Play slot. The latest, Series 13, was broadcast in 2022.

A Matter of Balance
A circus visits Edinburgh and attempts to drum up business with a high-wire act stretching from the Scott Monument across Princes Street without a safety net. The circus crowds attract a gang of pickpockets. McLevy is on the case. Then the high-wire artiste, Maria Capaldi, receives a death threat.

In disgrace with his superiors and feeling disowned by a still-disapproving Jean, he presses on with his investigation – but, after the opening of the new docks, nothing will ever be the same again for McLevy, Jean, Mulholland and Roach.
