Russia urges US, EU to stop «encouraging radicals» in Kosovo in their «anti-Serb frenzy»

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called on Western powers, especially the United States and the European Union, to stop «encouraging radicals» in Kosovo in their «anti-Serb frenzy» following the escalation of tensions over the weekend.

Thus, Zakharova has held the West «completely» responsible for a series of «experiments» in the Balkans that do nothing more than «undermine the fragile stability of the region», according to the Russian news agency TASS.

«We call on the United States and the European Union to refuse to encourage the radicals in Pristina (Kosovo’s capital) in their anti-Serb frenzy, and to stop provocations against the Kosovo Serbs,» Zakharova said.

Tensions on the border escalated on Sunday when Serbs barricaded the border in protest against the Kosovar government’s decisions on the implementation of measures to ban the use of Serbian identity cards and license plates on its territory, which was to take effect on Monday. Finally Kosovo has extended the application of the law by one month.

According to Zajarova, the origin of this conflict is «the non-fulfillment of its obligations by Pristina and the sabotage of the negotiations with Belgrade (capital of Serbia), although she has also pointed directly to the European Union for its «inability» to mediate between Serbia and Kosovo.

Already on Monday the Kremlin conveyed its full support to Serbia regarding the tensions with Kosovo and called Pristina’s demands «unreasonable», statements that were strongly rejected by the Kosovar authorities.

«It is a confirmation of how Russia sees Serbia: an instrument to destabilize Kosovo, the region and the European continent,» asserted Kosovar Government Chief of Staff Blerim Vela on his Twitter profile.
