U.S. Supreme Court Case May Strengthen Election Integrity Like Never Before
In an upcoming landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, the conservative justices could potentially strengthen election integrity like never before. The case centers around whether or not state legislatures have the ultimate power to regulate federal elections in their respective state. In the months before the 2020 election, many Democrat-controlled state courts and Democrats in the executive branch (governors and secretaries of state) made dramatic changes in how elections were held in their states.
This case is important case for two reasons: first, it could prevent last minute, unfair changes to elections; and second, and more controversially, it could allow for more gerrymandering.
Rick Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Irvine, said “There’s a wide range of ways the court could rule on this. Taken to its extreme, it would be a radical reworking of our system of running elections.”
