Kyrie Irving has been my favorite basketball player for a long time now — since he entered the league. It was obvious from the very beginning that he was a super special talent.

I used to stream all of the Cavs games his rookie year while I was living in Bermuda and no one was watching them because, well, they weren’t very good…but he was. At one point he had more game winners than LeBron in his ROOKIE YEAR.

Kyrie was clutch, had the best handles I’ve ever seen, and had this unbelievable way of driving to the hoop — and against all odds — somehow getting the ball up over, around, or through the tallest players in the league, not only avoiding a block, but putting the ball in the hoop every single time. It was true greatness in a way I never saw before.

Since then, Kyrie Irving has been my guy.

That was on the court. Now, due to unfortunate circumstances, he’s also been my guy off the court. I respect any person who, under any situation, stays true to their beliefs or their principles, especially during times of adversity.

Whether I agree with his views or not — that is so far from the point. The real point is the respect I have for any human being who stays true to their values even when the world tries to tear you down. Kyrie is one of the best examples of this, and again, this isn’t about the subject matter nor his personal opinion, but rather his ability to stay grounded in his truth, being consistent, and never wavering from his beliefs, regardless of what other people say or do.

I admire courage and I admire Kyrie Irving.
