Benzoyl Peroxide - How Does It Work?
* Benzoyl Peroxide is an antiseptic: it reduces the number of skin surface bacteria (but it does not cause bacterial resistance and in fact can reduce bacterial resistance. It also reduces the number of yeasts on the skin surface.
* Oxidizing agent: it softens and removes outer layers of skin to reduce comedomes
* Anti-inflammatory.

Which Type of Benzoyl Peroxide Should You Use?
Benzoyl peroxide comes in 3 main forms. It’s important to select the right one for your skin type, as well as preference.
1. Benzoyl Peroxide Facial Washes - great for acne on the trunk or to use in the shower
2. Benzoyl Peroxide Gel - works best if you have oily skin
3. Benzoyl Peroxide Cream - works if you have dry skin and is rapidly absorbed

Moreover, you need to choose the right concentration for your skin. The concentration that you choose will depend on your skin type and where you want to use it. When starting, always use 2.5% strength and increase it up depending on how you tolerate the product.

The face is quite sensitive, so choose a lower concentration 2.5% (upto 4%). The chest and back can usually tolerate a higher concentration.

Benzoyl Peroxide Side Effects:
It is normal in the first couple of weeks to feel skin tension, burning, stinging or itching sensation and a small amount of peeling or reddening. Most people have this, especially, when you first start using the product.

You can also minimize these side effects by starting with a lower concentration, 2.5% and reducing the number of times you apply Benzoyl peroxide to once every two days. Apply a non-oily moisturising product as often as needed to help soothe the skin.
Don’t use benzoyl peroxide if you have a sunburn.

Benzoyl peroxide is known for bleaching clothing and hair. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after each use and avoid touching any clothing, towels or bed linen until the Benzoyl Peroxide is completely dry.

Please see a doctor immediately if you have severe swelling and breathing difficulties, as these may be signs of an allergic reaction. This is very rare with benzoyl peroxide use.
