Culross Scotland - 17th Century Royal Burgh

Culross Scotland is a 17th Century Royal Burgh that has been featured prominently in the TV Series Outlander. There is almost no area of Culross that wasn't featured in the hit series. It stood in for the town of Cranesmuir.

One thing I must mention is that Culross is pronounced (Coo-riss). I don't think I quite discovered that until after I left. It was believed to have been founded by Saint Serf in the 6th century. It was most prominent during the 16th and 17th centuries as it was the center of the coal mining industry. It was also known for Salt Panning.

In Victorian times it was a bit of a ghost town and by the 19th century the harbor was filled and the village was cut off from the sea by the coastal railway.

In the 20th Century, the National Trust for Scotland began working on preserving the many historical buildings in town.

It is an extremely beautiful little town and it is worth the visit even if you are not an Outlander fan.
