On May 13, Major League Baseball, the New York Metropolis held a "Japan Night" before the home game against the Seattle Mariners.
As part of the event, Japanese Consul General in New York Mori Mikio originally planned to kick off the game. However, after Mori entered the arena, the athletes of the New York Metropolitan team were still warming up, and Mori was left in the sun.
In the end, Sammy failed to kick off the game, but was called off by the staff.
In response to this, the New York Metropolitan team issued a statement and apologized, saying that "the situation within the team hindered the kick-off ceremony, apologized for the loss of communication, and coordinated for the consul general to re-open the game in the future."
